blue_stonesGrief and Lossgrief

As we move though our lives, things around us change; sometimes it may feel for better or it may feel for worse. Regardless of how we feel about it, as humans, we react to change. The reaction is generally about ‘loss’ – something we must let go of.

We are in a perpetual state of letting things go; we let go of people, we let go of places and we let go of things.

For some fortunate few, letting go may feel easy. For most, especially those who have experienced a history of significant losses, it can be very painful.

This is grieving.

Some things we grieve over are:

  • Losing a loved one to death (including pets)
  • A relationship ending
  • Moving
  • Losing a part of the self  ie: physical health, retirement
  • A disability (in ourselves or a loved one)
  • A child leaving home
  • A lost or traumatic childhood
  • Moving into a new life stage

Losing anything we are attached to is painful. Grieving can feel scary and many of us try to avoid it. Sometimes our well intentioned loved ones can try to prevent us from expressing our grief. Because our society is so removed from the natural grief processes of life, we can feel scared to express our grief or see another express it. Ironically, this very natural process of living can feel abnormal to us.

Stifling our grief can complicate it. We can hold our grief for many years, and this is usually with a cost to our wellbeing. Counselling can support us through our grief, providing an understanding of this natural life process, and a means to work with grief in our lives.
